The WAterways Series
About
The WAterways Series aims to support informed public debate and policy innovation in Western Australian waterways. As effective solutions require collaboration across science, policy, industry, and community sectors, the series aims to collate existing knowledge and information on waterways in Western Australia to identify gaps and transformational priorities. It is hoped this can provide a robust, research‑based comprehensive foundation for shared understanding and constructive dialogue.
It is comprised of Research Perspectives and Issues Papers.
Research Perspectives frame or define Western Australian waterways from different angles: such as how water imaginaries or values evoke action, where sourced water comes from, water ecological systems, how water is conceptualised and water’s role in settlement.
Issues Papers focus on the major challenges facing Western Australian waterways. They address broad themes: such as the legal systems governing water access and management, how water is secured for urban and industrial development, areas of water priority and deficiency, and how water is planned and modelled for future generations. Given the interconnected and dynamic nature of water across society and the environment, the Issues Papers do not aim to be comprehensive. Instead, each synthesises complex topics through themed vignettes or case studies to prompt discussion and thought leadership. Together, the WAterways series is designed to be inter- and cross- disciplinary. It seeks to bring in diverse views to stimulate dialogue, identify gaps in current approaches, and support more integrated, evidence‑based decision‑making for waterways governance.
WAterways Perspectives
WAterways Issues Papers
Western Australian vision, values and emotions of water
This Perspective Paper examines how Western Australians view, value, and emotionally engage with water. These dimensions are critical, as they shape the imaginaries through which water is understood and, in turn, motivate action. Imagination enables people to represent possibilities beyond the present reality, to think about alternative futures, different times, and perspectives other than their own.
